With Music, There’s A Different Feeling In The Air

Some of the most memorable deliveries I attended had a more festive feeling that only music
could have created. Listening to music during labor can actually activate some mental processes
that can make labor sensations less uncomfortable. During labor, music helps us relax by
providing a positive source of distraction. It can reduce our anxiety to let us get into that mental
space where we’re better able to cope with and get through labor. Researchers are also looking at
how certain sound waves can stimulate the pituitary gland inside our brain to release endorphins
and increase levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter, and help oxytocin (a neurohormone that
helps our uterus contract) flowing better.
So what makes for great labor music? Of course, preferences for music are very personal and
depends on what you’re into.
